Skin cancer is one of the most common forms of cancer, often caused by UV rays and prolonged sun exposure. Because my family visits Orlando, Florida, almost every year, I learned early on how important sunscreen is before going outside. While there are many treatments available today for skin cancer, one stood out to me as especially interesting. Mohs surgery, performed by specialized dermatologists across Orange County and beyond, focuses on removing cancer in a very precise way while preserving as much healthy skin as possible.

Mohs surgery is a procedure used to treat skin cancer by removing it layer by layer. During the surgery, very thin layers of skin are cut away and examined under a microscope to check for cancer cells. This process continues until no cancer remains, allowing doctors to make sure all of the cancer is gone while minimizing damage to surrounding healthy tissue. Because of this careful approach, Mohs surgery has a high success rate and often reduces the need for additional treatments, according to Mayo Clinic. The procedure is usually done with local anesthesia, meaning the patient is awake but does not feel pain, and most people are able to go home the same day.

Mohs surgery is commonly used to treat types of skin cancer such as basal cell carcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma, and it is especially helpful for cancers that are large, fast-growing, likely to come back, or located in sensitive areas like the face where preserving healthy skin is important, according to Mayo Clinic. However, like any medical procedure, there are some risks, including bleeding, infection, pain, or scarring, although serious complications are less common.

If you are looking into treatments for skin cancer, it is especially important to look into the pros and cons of each option. While Mohs surgery may seem appealing because of its precision and effectiveness, it is still important to consult a dermatologist first to determine what treatment is best for you.
