Why Does Flying Cause Acne?

Have you ever wondered why your skin seems to break out after flying on an airplane? I used to think it was just because I was touching my face more or that airplanes were not the cleanest places. While that can play a role, it is not the full story. It does not happen to everyone, but it is more common than people think. I never really understood why this was happening until I looked into it more, and there are actually a few reasons behind it, along with ways you can prevent it.
According to Skin and Cancer Associates, airplane cabins create a very dry environment, often with humidity levels below 20 percent. This lack of moisture pulls water from your skin, which weakens your skin barrier and leaves it feeling dry and irritated. When your skin becomes dehydrated, it can sometimes respond by producing more oil, which can lead to clogged pores and breakouts. On top of that, higher altitudes expose you to more UVA rays, especially if you are sitting by the window, which can further stress your skin.
You might notice your skin reacting in different ways during or after a flight. For some people, it feels tight or looks dull. For others, it becomes more sensitive or irritated. Breakouts can also appear, even if your skin was relatively clear before your trip. This is because your normal routine is disrupted, and your skin is dealing with dryness, pressure changes, and recycled air all at once.
There are a few simple things you can do to help prevent this. Before your flight, focus on hydration and avoid using harsh products that could irritate your skin. During the flight, try to keep your skin simple and moisturized. Reapplying a gentle moisturizer, using lip balm, and drinking water can make a bigger difference than you might expect. After your flight, it is important to repair your skin barrier with a gentle cleanser and a hydrating moisturizer to help your skin recover.
At the end of the day, traveling is meant to be fun, and you should not have to constantly worry about your skin. Your focus should be on spending time with your friends and family and enjoying the experience. But the next time you notice a breakout after a flight, just remember that it is not only about stress from the airport. There is a lot happening to your skin behind the scenes, and understanding that can help you take better care of it.
