Why Your Acne Isn't Going Away

Acne is stubborn. My journey battling through this skin condition says it all. One day I am breaking out after a long day in the sun. Another day, my pores feel like they are trapped beneath the surface of my skin while I am hoping they will somehow disappear overnight. Looking back, my journey with acne has been long, frustrating, but also rewarding. As I have mentioned in previous blogs, finally consulting a dermatologist made me realize that all of it was part of the process. If you are reading this, you might be wondering why your acne is not going away, even when you feel like you are doing everything right.

According to Feinstein Dermatology & Cosmetic Surgery, acne is much more than just clogged pores or dirty skin. It is actually an inflammatory condition caused by a mix of oil production, dead skin cells, bacteria, and irritation happening beneath the surface. This explains why using random products or switching routines constantly does not always work. Acne is not caused by one single factor, so it usually cannot be fixed by one single product.

Another important point they highlight is that acne is not just a “teenage phase.” Many people continue to struggle with it into adulthood, and sometimes it even starts later in life. Things like stress, hormones, skincare products, and even your environment can all play a role. This is why your acne might look different from someone else’s and why copying someone else’s routine off social media does not always give the same results.

They also emphasize how common it is to accidentally make acne worse by overdoing skincare. Using too many harsh products, over-exfoliating, or constantly trying new treatments can damage your skin barrier and lead to even more breakouts. In a lot of cases, it is not that you are not trying hard enough. It is that your skin needs a more specific and balanced approach.

Overall, your journey with acne may feel long, stubborn, and like nothing is changing. That feeling is completely normal. Based on what is shared by Feinstein Dermatology & Cosmetic Surgery, acne requires understanding what is happening beneath your skin and being patient with the process. Continue with your routine if it is working for you, but if you feel like your acne is not improving or is getting worse, it may be time to rethink your approach. In every case, consulting a dermatologist can help guide you toward a treatment plan that actually fits your skin.
